Printed Media – Pamphlets

Pamphlets:

Pamphlets are an excellent medium for messaging.  They usually consist of a sheet of paper folded in half or into thirds and convey a short, concise message to the student.

Relating Posters to Instructional Objectives:

 

Class of media: Printed medium.

Characteristics: Colorful, short, bulleted format, informational, concise

 

Application to types of learning: 

 

Cognitive objectives:  Pamphlets should be considered for use if you are giving instructions, promoting an event such as a study group in the library, educational event, or instructions for enrolling in a course or applying for tuition assistance.

 

  • Teach students how to follow procedures and guidelines.
  • Teach students how to compare and contrast using pictures.
  • Teach students proper sequencing by listing step-by-step procedures for a task.

 

Psychomotor objectives:  None.

Affective objectives:  None.

 

Advantages and disadvantages of posters:

 

Advantages:

  • Pamphlets are an affordable method of distributing information.
  • Pamphlets offer students information that they can take with them.
  • Pamphlets make a quick, eye-catching impression on students.
  • Pamphlets take up little room and can easily be slipped into a pocket for later access.

 

Disadvantages:

  • Pamphlets can easily be discarded without being read.
  • The cost may outweigh the benefit if people aren’t taking or reading the pamphlet.

 

Considerations for Selecting Pamphlets for Instruction:

  • Can the information on the pamphlet be disseminated publicly?
  • Will the pamphlet format distract from the message you are trying to send?
  • Can the pamphlet be properly designed so that the exact message is correctly conveyed?
